This past summer, I was visiting our summer place in Sweden. It’s a place close to the water with birds and the smell of the ocean waking you up in the morning. It’s a place my mom refers to as paradise. When I visit, I’m reminded of the power of simplicity and the way nature brings us closer to ourselves. It reminds me of the world I wish to see and inhabit — one where we live alongside nature and where small communities, not big business — make decisions about our lives and livelihoods.
When I was visiting last summer, I shared my vision of the future with my aunt who was also visiting the cabin at the time. I told her that I dream of a world where we could live in smaller communities and where we know our neighbors. A world where we have support systems beyond our immediate families and where social systems and shared resources are available for all.
